Liberation Day 2025: Guernsey Commemorates 80 Years of Freedom
On May 9th, 2025, the Channel Island of Guernsey will mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation from German occupation during World War II with a comprehensive day of remembrance and historical celebration.
The island’s Liberations Day events promise to be a vivid journey through history, showcasing the resilience and spirit of Guernsey’s community. A centerpiece of the commemoration will be a Liberation Cavalcade at the Seafront, featuring nearly 350 entries that will transport visitors back to the momentous days of 1945.
The Guernsey Military History Company will stage a living history re-enactment focusing on the arrival of Force 135, the British military task force responsible for liberating the Channel Islands. This carefully researched performance aims to provide an authentic representation of the island’s wartime experience. Learn more about these events on the Bailiwick Express: Liberation Day Re-enactment Events.
Historic military vehicles will play a significant role in the day’s activities. The Albert Pier will host a display by Guernsey Military Motors & Cycles, featuring vintage British World War II military vehicles and motorcycles that provide a tangible connection to the island’s wartime past.
Musical performances will add emotional depth to the commemorations. The Bugles and Drums of the Stedfast Association and the 40s vocal group The Vibettes will provide period-appropriate entertainment, helping to recreate the atmosphere of the liberation period.
Maritime history will also be represented, with historic vessels including HMS Medusa and Rummy III (HMS Flycatcher) participating in the day’s events, their presence sponsored by Guernsey Petroleum Distributors Ltd.
