Foster Care Fortnight 2025: Guernsey’s Call for Compassionate Carers
In the heart of the Channel Islands, Guernsey is amplifying its urgent message during Foster Care Fortnight 2025: more families are needed to support vulnerable children. Running from May 12-25, this year’s campaign, themed “The Power of Relationships,” underscores the transformative impact of supportive connections in a child’s life.
Currently, 29 children reside with 26 foster families on the island, a number that highlights a pressing need for additional caring households. The Family Placement Service is actively working to bridge this gap, utilizing storytelling and community engagement to attract potential foster carers.
The campaign recognizes fostering as more than temporary accommodation—it’s about creating meaningful, stable environments where children can heal, grow, and thrive. Karen Reade, Team Manager of the Family Placement Service, emphasizes this point: “Foster carers literally change lives.“
Flexible Fostering Models
Different fostering models offer flexibility for potential carers, acknowledging that not all families look the same. From short-term emergency placements to long-term care, the service encourages individuals to explore options that might suit their unique circumstances.
Thoughtful Approach and Support
While the need is urgent, the service maintains a thoughtful approach, prioritizing quality matches between children and foster families. Comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided to ensure both children and carers can successfully navigate their shared journey.
Community Engagement and Awareness
Community involvement remains crucial. By raising awareness and challenging misconceptions about foster care, Guernsey hopes to expand its network of supportive, compassionate families willing to make a significant difference in children’s lives.
As part of the initiative, events such as a free movie weekend aim to engage the public and build understanding around fostering.
