Guernsey Prepares to Mark 80 Years of Liberation with Island-Wide Celebration
Guernsey is gearing up for a landmark commemoration of its liberation from Nazi occupation, with community leaders launching an innovative “Decorate to Liberate” campaign to engage residents in the 80th anniversary remembrance.
Community-Led Efforts to Transform the Island
The Education, Sport and Culture committee is spearheading efforts to transform the island into a vibrant tribute to its wartime history. Deputy Sue Aldwell emphasized the significance of community participation, encouraging residents to embrace creativity through decorations, art projects, and community initiatives.
A centerpiece of the preparations is a community bunting project along St. Peter Port’s seafront, symbolizing collective remembrance and solidarity. Online templates have been made available to enable widespread involvement, ensuring even those unable to attend main events can contribute.

The commemorations will feature a comprehensive program of events, including an unprecedented Cavalcade featuring over 250 vehicles and the anticipated return of parish and family floats. Special attention is being given to older residents, with Liberation Day-themed hampers being prepared for over 800 individuals in residential care.
